AICE is the Spanish acronym for the "Spanish Association of Conference Interpreters". This non-profit-making professional association has been guaranteeing high-quality professional Simultaneous and Consecutive Interpretation in Spain since 1964. It operates from Madrid, although its over 70 members are spread out over all of Spain. |
To join AICE, interpreters have not only had to prove to the decision-making organs in the Association they are fully qualified to interpret in their working languages, but also to demonstrate their professional and personal integrity. Members are encouraged to take part in refresher courses, organised directly by AICE or outsourced to other organisations of recognised prestige, so that we can constantly update our terminology and broaden our understanding of the latest technical developments. |

AICE provides first-class interpretation in the main languages of the European Union, as well as covering other less common languages. What makes AICE interpreters special is our ability to work "both ways", i.e. to interpret both into and out of at least two working languages. For us, this means we have to listen to everything that is going on. For the conference organiser, it means both a gain in quality and a reduction in the cost of the interpreting service. |
AICE members work for various different national and international organisations, interpreting for presidents, ministers, commissioners, etc. in the Spanish and the European Union governments, as well as for NATO, the UN and other similar bodies. However, AICE’s distinguishing feature has always been its specialisation in technical disciplines of all kinds, ranging from aeronautics to zoology. Because AICE members work intensively in both the public and the private sectors, we gain privileged access to understanding leading-edge concepts in science, business and technology. |
One of AICE’s main aims is to guarantee the success of any event requiring interpretation. Our conference experience enables us to provide advice about all aspects of organising a multilingual conference, i.e. how to maximise efficiency when designing the agenda and when forming the teams of interpreters (AICE knows who specialises in each area), which kind of interpreting to use on each occasion, how much technical equipment will be needed, etc. |
Last but in no way least, AICE members are all governed by a strict code of ethics as well as the AICE statutes. In today’s competitive world, we think that it is absolutely vital to guarantee our interpreters’ ethical commitment to confidentiality and professional service. |
