History of AICE
AICE and the Universities

Ever since it began, what made AICE interpreters different has been our ability to translate into two languages, unlike interpreters in the "pure booth" system, who will only translate into one language.

With the guarantee of AICE professionals, this system offers conference organisers magnificent quality, since the interpreters are completely involved in everything that is going on in the conference. There is no risk that the interpreters might "turn off" when the other language is being spoken and thereby miss something vital to understanding later proceedings.

Of course, each system has its advantages, according to time and place. For international organisations, where the terminology does not vary very much and there are almost no limits on the number of languages or the budget, the system of pure booths with interpreters with several passive languages (C ) working into a single language (A or B) is preferable. However, if it is a medical or technical meeting, the "both-ways" system works better, a) because the interpreters are always listening out for new words and ideas in both languages, b) because it requires fewer interpreters and therefore less floor space for booths and c) because it costs the organiser less. For example, if a meeting is to be held in English and Spanish, then only 2 interpreters will be needed, instead of 4 for pure booths, thereby halving the cost.

To be able to work in a "both-ways" booth, interpreters must keep totally up-to-date in their working languages, be able to speak and to understand them fully. This requires non-stop reading, listening and studying in both languages in order not to miss even the slightest nuance, something which AICE interpreters have long been renowned for.
